LightSquared, Spectrum & LTE Deployment

Operators have to make choices for technologies based on few rules – Technology, legacy network backward compatibility, technology ecosystem meaning vendors for Infrastructure/handsets and cost-benefit ratio. They also have to make choices involving which air interface technology to pick, but also which frequency band to utilize.  For the frequency band, both licensed and unlicensed alternatives exist providing different strategic paths.  Spectrum alternatives are compared based on ability to purchase, channel fragmentation, interference from other users, requirements to clear incumbent users, radiated power limitations and technology compatibility. These air interfaces are compared based on spectrum compatibilities, spectral efficiencies, link budgets and deployment costs.

In the near future, operators will be presented with, and challenged by, new and exciting opportunities to deploy LTE based mobile broadband services but like with any new network technology, comes the question of spectrum. Radio frequency is a valuable and finite resource and, today, there is simply not enough to satisfy demand. The need for spectrum is being driven by the pervasive convenience of mobile communications and increased penetration combined with improved performance and the falling costs of wireless devices & services. Smart RAN for 4G – Compact-BTS, Metro-Femto & ORI

As we race towards 4G there has been a trend in the radio access network (RAN) architecture of simplifying it, making it more compact and flat. The primary motive has been to enable mobile operators to maintain control on their network costs, while they deal with improving coverage and capacity. However, the explosion in data traffic  volumes, due to smart phones like the iPhone, have thrown a spanner in the works for operators to keep tabs on CAPEX/OPEX costs while they try and keep up with incessantly exploding mobile data demand from burgeoning smart devices, applications, and changing user behavior. This calls for a new architectural paradigm that optimizes existing cell site infrastructure, most of which is macro layer enabled, but at the same time introduces new network layers at the micro-, pico- and femtocell level, that can effectively complement the macro layer.

A new type of base station – the compact BTS along with Femto in the outdoor implementation has also entered the market, further reducing footprint and power consumption, while retaining the performance of macro BTSs. SDR implementation with LTE

ZTE, a global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, today announced a contract with Telenor Hungary, a subsidiary of one of the Telenor Group, to build a GSM/UMTS/LTE network in Hungary. ZTE will provide the company with radio and core infrastructure over the next five years, including its industry leading End-to-End and Uni-RAN solutions.

“As part of our vision of a Digital Hungary, we predict a growing need for simple- to-use, value-for-money mobile communications services across Hungary, especially mobile broadband and we now see that the time has come to switch to the next gear and take the lead in providing even faster and even more reliable services to our customers,” said Anders Jensen, CEO of Telenor Hungary.

ZTE will switch, expand and operate the GSM/UMTS/LTE network and deploy over 6,000 base stations, including LTE eNodeBs throughout the country. With its SDR-based solution, ZTE will help Telenor Hungary achieve a unified 2G/3G/LTE core network, supporting multi-mode and multi-band wireless services. This technology eliminates the need for further infrastructure upgrades, providing the operator with the flexibility to roll-out new services and a smooth evolution path to LTE.

Net neutrality and 4G Networks

The media is on fire talking about how Google has surrendered the net-neutrality pledge and gone with the carriers, but there are technical reasons how it is the carrier-way or the highway. FCC last year set forth three rules – Providers can’t favor their own content, Providers need to explain variable speeds and Providers cannot limit access to lawful content, which Comcast had it overturned in court. Though FCC might posses the power to make rules on net-neutrality, albeit it is the technologies that control the flow of traffic which will decide how much of content delivery is neutral after all! Broadband is re-defining the way technology is being deployed and who is playing a major role. The operators of the yore like – AT&T, Verizon are slowly giving way to spectrum holding partnerships like – Clearwire, Harbinger, etc. Cellular services are getting commoditized and networks of the future will become dumb pipes, through which services instead of just voice and data will be optimally delivered based on tiered pricing and Quality of service. Pay per minute and pay per megabyte will become a delivery mechanism for many operators, as user habits keep changing. Subscribers have become content generators from content consumers with social networking and micro blogging; and with smart phones making a plethora of applications that make use of data pipes similar to PCs, the trend will only keep increasing. QOS over 4G Networks

Cellular network operators across the world have seen an explosive growth of mobile broadband usage. Traffic volume per subscriber is increasing daily; in particular, with the introduction of flat-rate tariffs and more advanced mobile devices. Operators are moving from a single-service offering in the packet-switched domain to a multi-service offering by adding Value added services (VAS) that are also provided across the mobile broadband access. Examples of such services are multimedia telephony and mobile-TV. These services have different performance requirements, for example, in terms of required bit rates and packet delays. Solving these performance issues through over-provisioning typically is uneconomical due to the relatively high cost for transmission capacity in cellular access networks which includes radio spectrum and backhaul from the base stations.
